World of Warcraft: Midnight - Harandar Root Hub

World of Warcraft: Midnight - Harandar Root Hub

My big project for Midnight was the player hub in Harandar. This project was a huge undertaking and allowed me the opportunity to collaborate with a ton of teams.

My task started off by blockout out the entire layout of the interior space as well as place the 4 huge roots that curl down towards the top opening of the hub. From there it was establishing where the 4 player entrances would be based on the holes cut into place in the terrain. Once the layout was approved, I started the long process of creating roots, fleshing out the different rooms and locations within the hub, and applying the base textures from the zone to the model. Once the base look was approved, from there it was the continued process of fleshing out spaces, modeling roots, overall polish of the hub.

One of the biggest challenges was making sure the work I was doing inside was not affecting the work being done on the outside and vice versa. With how little space we had in between the terrain and the top of the cave, it relied on craft placement and great care from myself and the World Building team. Both Victor and Nikolay did amazing jobs on the exterior, working with me to move stuff or adjust anything that needed to be moved. They did a stellar job creating the player space outside of this area that tied it all together. It was a fun challenge to incorporate the ideas and feedback to the hub as it progressed along. Trying to make the interior space feel like a natural cathedral with columns of roots and specific lighting.

As part of this task, I also got to utilize Substance to create the various red rune textures you see all over the walls. Once their base look was established in Substance, I then polished and finished the runes in photoshop. They were inspired by the shape language being made on other props for the zone from the prop team in order to make them all cohesive.

Once the cave was all done being modeled and textured, it was time to set dress and prop up the place. I did a pass of the natural plants getting the basics in line for where things should go. From there Jessi finished propping up the interior space, taking what I did and adding more turning the interior into a lush planted environment. Jessi collabed with Nikolay on the World Building team to get all of the prop team assets placed as well. This cave was a huge undertaking, and every hand that touched it, brought it to life and it is so beautiful to run around.
